The short version

Beef tallow is rendered animal fat. The direct literature does not establish a general cosmetic-performance claim for retail beef-tallow balms. The 2024 scoping review of tallow and skin found 147 records but included only 19 heterogeneous studies, with sparse direct human evidence and major gaps in controlled research (Russell et al., 2024).

For someone asking whether tallow works for skin, that is not enough to turn a trend into a recommendation. No reliable universal comedogenicity rating for beef tallow was identified in the reviewed evidence (Russell et al., 2024). So the honest answer is neither “tallow is guaranteed to clog pores” nor “it cannot clog pores.” The response can differ with the formula, the rest of the routine, and the person using it.

Why the appeal is not imaginary

The steelman is straightforward. The tallow evidence review found that some formulation studies reported moisturizing or hydration signals, even though the studies were too different and too small to establish a retail-product effect (Russell et al., 2024).

That is a plausible cosmetic reason someone might enjoy a balm. It is also a much narrower claim than “this fixes my skin.” A pleasant film, a short-term instrument reading and a disease outcome are three different endpoints. The available tallow literature does not let us silently substitute one for another (Russell et al., 2024).

“Natural” origin does not settle the safety question either. The FDA says it has not defined “natural” for cosmetics and that safety and labeling duties apply regardless of whether an ingredient comes from a natural or synthetic source (FDA, Small Businesses & Homemade Cosmetics). Processing, animal source, additives, storage and quality controls can all make two products sold as “tallow” materially different (Russell et al., 2024).

The receipt that changes the story

The most useful paper here is not a tallow advertisement. It is a 2025 cross-sectional analysis of 200 English-language social-media posts and videos: 50 each from YouTube videos, YouTube Shorts, Instagram and TikTok, with duplicates excluded (Almatroud et al., 2025). Eighty-two percent of the sampled posts recommended tallow for skincare, while evidence citations were uncommon and financial bias was common in the sample (Almatroud et al., 2025).

The condition claims are especially revealing. Twenty-nine posts claimed an acne benefit, 25 discussed atopic dermatitis, and 12 discussed psoriasis, but the authors concluded that evidence for tallow skincare and dermatologic condition efficacy was insufficient (Almatroud et al., 2025). This is a content analysis, not proof that any individual creator was wrong or that tallow causes a condition. It does show the gap between what the feed is confidently saying and what the underlying research can support.

The 78-person study people stretch too far

One small study is often useful as a reality check because its actual material is so easy to lose in retellings. Kowalska and colleagues evaluated cosmetic model emulsions with 78 respondents and reported favorable stability, sensory ratings and moisturizing properties under the study conditions (Kowalska et al., 2017).

But this was not a jar of pure beef tallow. The formulation used mutton tallow and walnut oil that had been enzymatically interesterified, plus a carboxymethyl-cellulose thickener and specified homogenization conditions (Kowalska et al., 2017). It was not a trial of a commercial tallow balm, did not establish non-comedogenicity, and did not validate a retail product. Its 78 respondents tell us that one engineered emulsion could feel and measure favorably; they do not tell us that beef tallow works for every face (Kowalska et al., 2017).

That mismatch is the receipt: the experiment is real, but the internet has often changed the tested formulation while keeping the conclusion.

One untested claim: comedogenicity

There is no dependable beef-tallow number in the reviewed literature that can predict what a retail balm will do on every person (Russell et al., 2024). Even a formula described with one ingredient name is not a complete exposure description: concentration, accompanying oils or waxes, texture, application amount and storage all matter. The FDA places responsibility for cosmetic safety and truthful labeling on the firm marketing the product, rather than treating natural sourcing as a safety guarantee (FDA, Small Businesses & Homemade Cosmetics).

So “non-comedogenic” is not a conclusion we can supply for all tallow, and “proven comedogenic” is not one either. A cautious reader can treat an unfamiliar balm as an unverified formula until its ingredients and quality information are clear; that is a label-reading point, not a diagnosis or a promise about what your skin will do.

What this page is not saying

This is not an argument that every traditional ingredient is bad. The evidence can support a modest cosmetic description: a tallow-containing product may feel occlusive, and a specific tested formulation may show a hydration signal (Russell et al., 2024). It cannot support claims that beef tallow treats, cures, prevents or manages acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, inflammation or wounds. The 2025 media study specifically found those condition claims were commonly made without cited support (Almatroud et al., 2025).

If you are managing a diagnosed or persistent skin condition, ingredient hype is not a substitute for a clinician’s assessment. Stop treating a worsening reaction as proof that a product is “purging,” and seek medical advice when a reaction is severe, spreading or persistent; this page cannot identify its cause.
